I have used several Word Processors over the years, but I have finally settled on Apple’s Pages App. Pages has gradually progressed in usefulness and sophistication with every release. It has become my go to Word Processor App. With that in mind, here are a couple of tips for setting up Pages that can save you a bunch of grief.
If you have used the Pages App for any length of time, you know that when you first boot it up and create a “New” document it goes to the Template Chooser. Here, you can scroll through the various Templates for one that suits your type of document. This functionality drives me crazy because about 90% of the time I just want a “Blank” Word Processor document. There is a way around this extra effort.
Just go into the Pages Preferences General Tab:
Next, click on “Use Template” and then click on Change Template:
It will take you to the usual Templates area. When you are in here, click on the Template you use the most. In my case, that is the “Blank” Template. Now when you open Pages and click on “New” it will not take you to the Templates area, but it will open an Untitled copy of the “Blank” Template. This saves you some time and aggravation as you use Pages.
Pages Ignore Words
If you write about things with specific names like I do, then your Word Processor will flag all those item names for spelling. This can be very annoying. Pages has a nice setting that allows you to add the spelling of a word such as a product or business name to Ignored Words. Here is how that works.
Go into the Pages Preferences and click on the Auto-Correction Tab:
Then click on Ignored Words. Pages opens the Ignored Words section:
Click on the plus symbol and type in the word that you wish to have ignored. Then click OK and it will ignore the spelling of that word. This setting holds over Restarts of the Pages App. It is not a document setting, but an App Setting for all future documents.
The Pages App gets more useful with each upgrade. It may not be Microsoft Word, but it is more than adequate for many Mac users, especially with some of these very helpful Settings.
