Catalina iPhone Sync

There are lots of changes in the new Catalina OS slated for Fall release. The breaking up of all the iTunes functions into separate Apps is a big part the new OS. One result of the iTunes restructuring is that iOS devices now connect into and sync through the macOS Finder. I think this is long overdue, a welcome change. Here is what that looks like.

iPhone Sync

The Developer version of Catalina is running as a Parallels Virtual machine on my Mac. When I plugged in my iPhone it appeared in the Finder sidebar. When I clicked on it it took me to the following window:

Catalina iPhone Window

As you can see this first window looks and feels very much like it did in iTunes. It is almost as if Apple just cut this window out of iTunes and pasted it into the Finder. Most of the information is close to if not the same as the old iTunes version. This is where I will spend most of my time.

I am not a big music person, but here is the Music section anyway:

These windows are the same as before. You would Sync all your music here. The other Tabs, Movies, TV Shows etc are like the Music section.

The thing I like the most, besides moving the whole sync thing to the Finder, is the Files Tab:

The Files Tab is nicely done. You can drag a file out of this area onto your Mac or load a file into one of these listed Apps:

I don’t think I need to cover the remaining Tabs. They are almost the same as the iTunes version. I am sure you get the general idea.

Conclusion

It is about time that Apple broke up the iTunes monopoly into smaller satellite Apps. I think this will work fine. Accessing and syncing an iOS device through the Finder is an added benefit, it feels natural. Even though Catalina is in the early Beta stages, it is looking good.
