CleanMyMac Uninstaller Leftovers

I think most of you want to maintain your Mac in proper order not only to extend the life of the machine but also to avoid problems. There are several things Apple includes in their OS that can help with this. I know some people say we need no other maintenance Apps on a Mac which may be true. However, I think having a third party maintenance application is not all that bad depending on what App it is. The App I used the most for this purpose is CleanMyMac by MacPaw software. I discovered something new to me in this App the other day and I wanted to share it with you.

Uninstaller Leftovers

Lately, I have been using the CleanMyMac (CMM) Uninstaller feature to uninstall Apps from my Mac. I have other Apps that will do this, but CMM seems to do a good job of it. While in the Uninstaller feature of CMM I noticed “Leftovers”. After doing a bit of investigation I discovered that this is a handy feature for cleaning up your Mac. Here is how it works.

When you are in the CMM window, click on the Uninstaller feature:

Then look in the column to the right and click on “Leftovers”. You will be taken to a window similar to this one:

When you uninstall an App on your Mac most, if not all, of the peripheral files are removed. However, no uninstaller is perfect so some files get missed. These files are “Leftovers”. The CMM Uninstaller lists some of these “Leftovers”.

To remove a Leftover just scroll down the list and click on it. Then click on Uninstall:

Uninstall Leftover

CMM will uninstall that App and finish with this type of screen:

Cleanup Finish
Cleanup Finish

After going through the list for a while I realized I could select multiple items and do the cleanup all at one time:

Multiple Cleanup
Multiple Cleanup

When you uninstall multiple items CMM goes to a screen like this:

Uninstall Multiple
Uninstall Multiple

It just goes down the list uninstalling. When it is finished it gives you a completed window.

I cleaned up several Megabytes of junk on my iMac using this feature. If you are pressed for space on your machine, using “Leftovers” might be helpful.

Conclusion

CleanMyMac does all kinds of things in Mac Maintenance. I think this “Leftovers” feature could be handy. Most of what I removed as leftovers were things from Apps that I have previously removed from Mac. If you don’t think you need a third party Mac Maintenance App I understand. But, if you are considering getting one, I highly recommend CleanMyMac. It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. You get a lot of functionality for the money.
